Over the last 20 years, roadside air pollution has remained at an alarming level which is two times over the WHO’s standard.
In the recent years, the number of registered vehicles has continued to soar despite government efforts to curb vehicle emission. The number of registered vehicles has increased drastically from 530,000 to 820,000 in the last decade. This has seriously increased traffic congestion and thus contributing to the increase level of roadside air pollution.
According to the Hedley Environmental Index of HKU School of Public Health, the air pollution in 2016 has caused 1,686 premature deaths in Hong Kong. Children, elderly, and grass roots citizens are the most vulnerable demographic groups to air pollution.
We need your immediate support to urge the government to improve their current environmental policies and implement more effective policies to curb vehicle growth.
